Micron Technology Inc. announced big plans to expand in New York state, but engineers at its headquarters in Boise will still lead the company’s technology development efforts. The chip-making company announced Tuesday that it would invest $100 billion over the next two decades to build a “mega fab” for memory manufacturing in Clay, New York, about 15 miles north of Syracuse. Fab is short for semiconductor fabrication plant. Construction on the massive site is expected to begin in 2024 with production ramping up in the years after. SALMON (KIVI TV) — An opening ceremony was held Friday for a new cobalt mine near Salmon which represents a significant day for the domestic supply chain of the metal. Australian mining company Jervois Global Limited officially opened operations, but the mine won’t be operating at full capacity until the first quarter of 2023, according to Matt Lengerich, Executive General Manager of Idaho Cobalt Operations. “When we come up to full operations, we will produce about 2000 tons of cobalt in concentrate each year. A proposal to dramatically scale back Idaho’s energy code could impact a small portion of home sales backed with loans from the federal government. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development told BoiseDev the federal government requires homes built in the last year before they are sold to someone with a loan backed by Federal Housing Administration, the USDA or the VA to meet minimum energy efficiency standards stricter than what Idaho is considering.
