While not a new product, CBD has recently been thrust into the spotlight during the debate on cannabis and whether or not it should be legalized. If you are new to the realm of CBD, you may be confused about what it is, what the purpose is and how to use it, and you aren’t the only one. In this article we cover some of the basics behind CBD and it’s recent jump in popularity.
What is CBD?
While there can be some confusion with the different terms used, CBD stands for cannabidiol and is one of the active ingredients of cannabis. While it is also part of medical marijuana, CBD is one of the products derived from hemp, and contains less than 0.3% THC. Because of this, CBD will not cause the “high” people experience when using marijuana. CBD is legal in many states, has some restrictions in others, and is illegal in only one state (Idaho).
Why Do People Use It?
While studies are still ongoing, preliminary results have shown positive results in the effectiveness of using CBD to help with a variety of conditions. Currently, one drug has been approved by the FDA to treat seizures caused by certain medical conditions, but there is evidence that CBD can help with more than just that. It is believed that CBD can also assist with pain relief, nausea, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and fevers. An additional main benefit of CBD that users like is that it is not addictive, as many other medications are, leaving them with one less concern when treating chronic conditions.
How Do They Use It?
Depending on the reason for using CBD, there are different forms that people usually use. Because CBD is a product derived from hemp, it isn’t often smoked, the way marijuana is. The most common forms are capsules, gummies, oils, and topical creams. Topical creams are most often used for localized pain relief and are simply rubbed into the skin. Capsules and gummies, also called edibles, are an easy way to make sure you get an exact dosage, but they aren’t as fast acting. The most common form of CBD is oils. They are often taken as a tincture on the tongue or can be mixed into recipes or drinks to disguise the taste. The method of consumption you choose will depend on individual preference and what your needs are.
CBD has a bright future as a natural remedy, helping people deal with their mental and physical issues. If you are interested in using CBD, just make sure you talk to your doctor in advance so you don’t accidentally cause an issue with any other treatments you are using.
